Peet's now offers very smooth aluminum capsules for Nespresso Original Line coffee machines, manufactured by JDE (Jacobs Douwe Egberts) and contain non-specific Arabica. Coffee roasted in France. Each box is made from responsibly sourced mixed board and the packs are distributed by Peet's in Berkeley. The capsules look really good, maybe even more visually appealing than Nespresso's own capsules. They weigh 7 grams each before brewing, as do my Nespresso pods and I've had no trouble running them through any of my Nespresso machines. I've heard people get excited when they open a box of Nespresso coffee pods and sniff the contents. I don't want to smell the coffee because I want it sealed in capsules where they stay fresher and probably produce more crema. They are truly hermetically sealed and there is no coffee aroma until the capsule is punctured and hot water dispenses the coffee liquid into the cup. The flavor profile of Crema Scura, which ranks at number 9, isn't like Arpeggio or Envivo Lungo, Nespresso's number nine. It tastes like Pete's espresso, a taste that took me back to my days in San Francisco when I went to Berkeley to buy a bag of home-roasted coffee. I was able to enjoy a complimentary cup of freshly brewed coffee with a pound of beans, which was unthinkable at the time. When I tasted Peet's Aged Sumatra, I enjoyed the long aftertaste that lingered long after the coffee cup was emptied. When I moved out of the Bay Area, I ordered Pete's Coffee from California or asked people to pack a bag or three in their suitcase when they came to visit. My own suitcase always smelled like Pete's coffee because I was commissioned to bring it east for friends to try it on me. Now it's available in grocery stores, major stores, and restaurants, along with Starbucks products and a variety of other coffees. The price of these capsules is two cents more than Nespresso Arpeggio or Ristretto, but three cents less than Darkan or Kazar, which are my favorites. They have a distinct flavor that some might call "burnt," but I call it a mouthful of earthy flavor. I add these to my regular Nespresso boutique or mail order purchases as I know I can enjoy Pete's nostalgic cup of Nespresso coffee makers, but they will not replace my Nespresso coffee. Since it's aluminum, I suspect Nespresso can accept them for recycling. If not, I'll hold off buying more Pete capsules until I can take them to my local Pete stores for recycling.
