Review on KYB 565044 MonoMax Gas Shock by Joshua Albright

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Easy installation: Raise your truck by the frame

Buy now! I bought my 1995 Bronco (351W Eddie Bauer) in May of this year (no rust; FTW in the New Mexico desert) and finally got around to changing the shocks last weekend. I figured my existing shocks were more or less blown out as the truck steered too hard and drove like an old school bus. I wanted some of the shocks to be sturdy but not explicitly designed for off-road use (I want my rig to go anywhere and drag well, but I have little intention of ever crawling over rocks or skidding through mud ). and these KYB MonoMax fit the bill perfectly. As others have pointed out, they come uncompressed and are not confused. To make it easier to remove broken who-knows-how-old Monroes from my rig, I sprayed my PB Blaster nuts and bolts the night before. I replaced the fronts with KYB Monomax 565043s at the same time as the rears. My Bronco rolls on 33 wheels with a 3 inch body lift so it's very easy to get under. Knowing that these HD shocks are uncompressed, I figured jacking the truck up by the frame would be the best way to stretch the shocks as much as possible. possible during installation. Easier said than done with my rig setup, but I have a 3 ton Powerbuilt bottle jack with jack stand - you should definitely buy it if you have a truck, btw - which I placed under my hitch (the 5th generation). inches below). than my frame) change the tail. Note that it is not necessary to completely lift the tires off the ground; I raised my truck just before the start. Given the Revain reviews in place, I was prepared to put up an epic struggle to don the KYB, perhaps with the help of tow straps and other gear. But this was not the case. After installing the top bolt, it was fairly easy to slide the bottom of each shock into its mount and then use the back of my crescent wrench to align the shock's bolt hole with it. Bracket. Keep in mind that I'm built like half an orc (6ft 2in, 225ft) and I probably have more room under my truck than most people. The fronts were more or less easy to hit. I carry nothing but tools, fluids and my spare in/on the back of my Bronco (I also folded my back seat), and with these KYBs my rear end goes up almost 2 inches (front is almost 1 inch higher). While under the truck, I noticed that the bushings on my rear anti-roll bar had turned to non-working rotten dirt. With new shocks and said bushings swapped out, the Bronco rides and handles like a new monster truck. The only downsides that have little to do with the KYB are that I REALLY have to put in a playguard when the body is taller, and that can i finish up buy the 35th earlier than planned.
