Review on BLACK+DECKER Workmate Portable Workbench WM125: 350 lb. Capacity - Efficient and Mobile by Bryan Reed

Pretty decent lightweight workbench

Basically what I needed and expected. The Workmate 125 is a lightweight, portable workbench made in China. This is NOT for big, heavy work and the product description says so. I build small stringed instruments and plan to use this workbench on guitar, ukulele and similar necks. This is the right choice for that. Pros: All necessary parts and accessories are included Light weight Easy to fold, albeit with some tugging Material is decent if not top quality (e.g. thin metal) Vise hole area is good for most light projects . Cons: Assembly takes some time and might test your patience. Recommend having someone help at some points when tightening the nuts. Some parts needed are included and NOT listed in the parts list or included in the assembly instructions. About the assembly: If you follow the instructions, YOU WILL HAVE TWO NUTS. They are not listed in the parts list and are not mentioned in the assembly instructions. These washers fit over the unthreaded ends of the vise bolts between the frame and vise handle. Take an hour, maybe a little less. Gather all parts and equipment and review the bill of materials. If you have experience building things, you will find that following your experience of other similar things is a better guide than instructions. The grip lever is attached to the vise screws with a cylinder pin. A number of reviewers have suggested using nuts and bolts/screws instead as they found these roll pins difficult to drive in. The pair speculated that the handle might break when hammered. I took this a step further and used spring pins and hammered them in with a small ball head hammer. It took about fifteen light taps to drive it into the hole and close flush with the handle. Unfortunately, I then found that the two washers (see above) had to be placed between the frame and the handles. Luckily I had the right size rod and was able to knock out the pins, put on the washers and put the vise handles back on. Normally this would have annoyed me, but I found it more amusing as I didn't notice the "extra" parts when I was inventorying the kit.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Some issues
