Reverse osmosis membranes are not cheap. Where I live, water is insanely expensive, so a malfunctioning diaphragm can quickly turn the cost of replacing it into flushing water down the drain. This is by far the cheapest membrane I have found for my general water system and has a noticeable improvement in cycle time and water loss after replacing my 3 year old original! I got disgusting tap water from a lake a few miles up the road. Our rural water system filters out fish, most plants and some larger particles, then mixes them with chloramines in varying proportions to ensure most life forms are dead. I have tan or yellowish water for days, high turbidity and always high salinity, but I can make fine water <12ppm TDS and good flavor for me and hydrobutons.
