My "ship" VHF is in the navigation station on my sailboat and I always have a waterproof portable radio on deck in case I need to talk to someone quickly. We ended up never using the ship's radio because it was inconvenient to go under. Handhelds are good but you have to remember to charge them, they fall in different directions and you don't see them in bad weather - a good backup option but not for everyday use. The thing has the full functionality of my standard Horizon 2200, including a small AIS display. Now I make most of my calls with it and often don't pick up my PDA. The voice quality is excellent and I have full functionality. I want the radio to be an average wattage, but it's either 1 or 25 watts. Most local calls work well with just 1 watt, so that's what I use by default. My only criticism of the mic is that it was a hassle to plug into the hull of the boat. It would be better if they made a wireless version.
