Carpet cannot be removed for cleaning in a pet accident. Using an enzymatic carpet cleaner only makes the problem worse because you can't clean the carpet on the steps. I don't think this problem can be solved, so these ladders are useless for my pets at the moment. I ended up using Gorilla Gel Glue to hold the sides together because the nails weren't holding the structure together. I left out the flimsy pressed cardboard backing because it won't stay in place. These stairs are very difficult to move as they easily fall apart if you don't remove the steps as the entire staircase would just fall apart.
