Review on πŸ”§ Powerbuilt 640811 Back Tap Thread Repair: Restoring Threads with Ease by Dan Phillips

Revainrating 5 out of 5

It worked great - be sure to follow the instructions!

An ingenious remedy. Like many others, I screwed a spark plug into an aluminum motorcycle head. If the spark plug does not seem to go in smoothly, STOP. That's because you start crossing the threads over and the last thing you want to do is mess up ALL the threads! Tips for a successful thread repair: Lubricate the tap! After inserting the tap into the spark plug hole, lightly tighten the knurled tab at the top of the tool; maybe one turn is tight from totally loose. SLOWLY push the tap through the hole by turning the entire tool counter-clockwise with a combination (or adjustable) wrench until it is fully inserted through the hole. If you encounter resistance while turning counterclockwise, stop and rock the tool back and forth (clockwise-counterclockwise-clockwise, etc.) until it loosens. hole (clockwise) until it loosens. Turn the knurled knob clockwise 1/2 turn. Then start screwing the tool into the hole again. Remember to stop and rock back and forth if you meet resistance. With the tool removed from the hole, examine the spark plug hole threads with a flashlight to determine if the process needs to be repeated. For myself, I made 4 or 5 passes of the thread (1/2 turn of the knurled knob each) until the thread was clean enough to use. . Notice how close I hold the wrench to the carving tool. This prevents over-tightening or blocking of the threading tool. YOU DO NOT NEED A LOT OF TORQUE TO TURN A THREADING TOOL. If it doesn't turn, slightly loosen the knurled bit and try again! You will end up with a nicely cut spark plug hole. Much luck!
