. While not a line of "L" brand lenses, I would say they are quite comparable to L-type lenses. And of course you don't pay the premium price you have to pay for L-type lenses. Image quality is very sharp for me (although I must add that I'm not a professional photographer). However, you will need a very good tripod and probably the color of the lens itself, since the depth of field is very shallow at close range. The 2.8 aperture is a great feature as you will struggle to get light in some situations. The USM motor allows for fast focusing, especially in good light (although it did occasionally take me a while to focus in low light). All in all a very good lens for the price, the more serious photographer always has the option of using Canon's L-series macro. And of course if you need more close-ups there's always the MP-E 65 option. Would give it five stars and have already recommended it to some of my Canon-using friends. Many Thanks
