Review on Dr.meter Pinless Wood Moisture Meter: Accurate & Non-Destructive Detector for Wood Firewood, 4%-80% Moisture Measuring Range by Gary Stringfield

Experimenting with penetration depth and minimum workpiece thickness

I use this to measure the moisture content of wood that has been sawn for use in guitars, which is thin wood that after re-sawing is about is 3/16 inch thick. would be accurate on a thin canvas as the field appeared to penetrate the canvas and partially look at the air from the other side. It appears that this is indeed happening: measurements on a thin canvas show lower moisture levels than on a thick one Butt about 9/16" thick; from that thickness onwards, readings remain constant. Methodology: I took several sets of newly sawn boards, each 3/16" thick (and cut into quarters, although I didn't expect this to be the case would make a difference), stacked 5 of these to get a thicker board (about 1" thick) and measured the humidity. I then removed one 3/16" board from each and measured again. The pictures show the process. Results: Minimum thickness to get accurate measurements depends on moisture content: burned wood (5-10% moisture content), material should be about 1/2 inch thick to get an accurate reading. With wet material the readings seem to be accurate even down to 3/16 inch thickness (the minimum I've measured). Specifically, up to a thickness of 3 sheets (9/16 inch), readings were constant regardless of moisture content. - Thickness doesn't matter. On 2 panels (3/8 inch thick), the moisture content decreased approximately 20% for fully air dried material (5.5% moisture) and 10% for partially air dried material (11% moisture). and not at all for very fresh wood (moisture content 35%); At 1 board (3/16 inch thick), the moisture content values were about half the "thick" values for the two sets of dryers, but still about right for green forest. The following tables show the dimensions.
