pen less; easy to use and works great.

Works very well. I compared the moisture reading with an older needle gauge and the gauges agree very closely. There are good reasons to have a pin or no-pin version. The pin types don't require as much readable area, but you should be able to insert the pins into the wood, and eventually the pins will likely need to be replaced. At the moment I am very happy with it and use it exclusively instead of a pin type meter. It's amazing how even wood stored in a store here in Arizona can absorb…

Pros
  • Detection without damage
Cons
  • Some difficulties

Amazing little device

Amazing little device. It's easy to calibrate and has subsequently given me consistent/repeated measurements on various types of wood - pine, walnut and oak - that I have in my basement. I'm not testing accuracy on any known device or anything, but the readings I got make sense based on when and where I acquired each tree. The walnut was bought from a good hardwood store and was all kiln dried and the sizes were mostly between 6.5% and 8%. Some pine was taken off the counter at the orange shop…

Pros
  • Exceptional accuracy
Cons
  • I vaguely remember

Dr.Meter MD918 is good but a little weird

Have been using the meter for a few months. Pinless sampling has both advantages and disadvantages over its pinned counterpart. Sampling with pins requires the meter's two probes to be inserted into the material, while the non-pin meter simply needs to be held against it to calculate moisture content. The disadvantage of this method is that the entire sensor plate must be contacted to ensure the accuracy of the readings. This may not be possible with thin material or in confined spaces. The…

I like it more than the spell checker.

Well first of all it's really great for a few days, really kicking ass, and everything makes sense. Then one morning you do something horrible and it starts acting crazy. How this thing suddenly tells me after 4 days of stable results that my 20% wood is 44%, don't wait, 45% moisture. Wait what *I* did. I just got here and turned it on. I didn't even finish that coffee. I estimate I placed it 2 inches closer to the center of the board than ever before. the same gauge in these three places and…

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • No instructions

I use this to measure the moisture content of wood that has been sawn for use in guitars, which is thin wood that after re-sawing is about is 3/16 inch thick. would be accurate on a thin canvas as the field appeared to penetrate the canvas and partially look at the air from the other side. It appears that this is indeed happening: measurements on a thin canvas show lower moisture levels than on a thick one Butt about 9/16" thick; from that thickness onwards, readings remain constant…

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Big and bulky
