Works very well. I compared the moisture reading with an older needle gauge and the gauges agree very closely. There are good reasons to have a pin or no-pin version. The pin types don't require as much readable area, but you should be able to insert the pins into the wood, and eventually the pins will likely need to be replaced. At the moment I am very happy with it and use it exclusively instead of a pin type meter. It's amazing how even wood stored in a store here in Arizona can absorb excess moisture. The lumber we buy from a sawmill or sawmill can vary widely in terms of moisture content, so this gauge will help us decide which lumber we can use now and which planks will need a while to acclimate. know what you are dealing with other than a gauge and this is the best gauge we have ever used.
