Review on Dr.meter Pinless Wood Moisture Meter: Accurate & Non-Destructive Detector for Wood Firewood, 4%-80% Moisture Measuring Range by Jonathan Abreu

I like it more than the spell checker.

Well first of all it's really great for a few days, really kicking ass, and everything makes sense. Then one morning you do something horrible and it starts acting crazy. How this thing suddenly tells me after 4 days of stable results that my 20% wood is 44%, don't wait, 45% moisture. Wait what *I* did. I just got here and turned it on. I didn't even finish that coffee. I estimate I placed it 2 inches closer to the center of the board than ever before. the same gauge in these three places and constantly seeing these readings showing that the MC varies across the width of the board. And that can be very different. for the entire board length. Pay attention to the values on my phone. It tells me what's really going on in the forest and you might be shocked. One side of the face of my 2x8 was 14%, the center of the face was 44% and the other side of the same face was 17.5%. So much for my board being under 20% and ready for oil. Can't say enough about this tool. While I don't have a link for testing, I feel the accuracy is there when you test the board. I mean, you might have a little absolute error, but the values in one place *compared* to another are repeatable and correct. The density chart in Directions was great and is best photographed to have ready on your phone. I get the biggest absolute error when adjusting the ambient temperature. For example, you can observe how the values change when you go from cold to warm. What the instructions don't make clear is where the meter needs to reach thermal equilibrium. For example, if you open the lid of the case, leave the meter in the case for a while, and place the case on wood for 10 minutes, the meter reading will not be the same as if you took the meter and placed it directly on wood for 10 minutes. . Since I'm testing wood, I think I need to put up the meter here for about half an hour.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • No instructions
