Does it really work?

Last year lightning went through my DirecTV antenna via coax to a DTV receiver and then via an HDMI connector to my Panasonic Viera TV. The DTV receiver was fine but it blew all the HDMI ports on my TV which is MUCH more sensitive. Guilty. I didn't ground the dish or the coax. I fixed the TV. I also ordered this unit and installed it on the ground block along with my DTV coaxial cable. Although I witnessed the first lightning strike, I didn't see the last one. But the results were the same as the HDMI ports are burned out. The RCA connectors are still unaffected and I can still use a TV with an HDMI RCA connector. I have since repaired the TV but noticed that the DTV receiver was having trouble getting a signal from the antenna until it finally stopped working. After some troubleshooting I decided to bypass this device and indeed DTV worked again. So the good news is that it turned off and was working properly. The bad news is that it failed in its primary job of protecting my gear. The reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 is because I don't know if it prevented further damage. I have since removed this device. The antenna is still grounded externally to the ground block, but I also connected the incoming coax through the UPS coax filter in hopes that this would prevent future problems. Now we just have to wait for the next storm.

Pros
  • Pretty impressive
Cons
  • boring packaging
