Review on πŸ”ͺ Norton 8-Inch Combination Oilstone (Product Code: 614636855653) by Nathan Tsugawa

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I recommend it to all home sharpeners.

UPDATE --- I've used it to sharpen a hatchet and some vintage knives now! Did a SUPER JOB! I used kerosene as the grinding oil and the stone soaked it up completely. Metal cutting was fast on the rough side and still pretty fast on the "thin" side. I would actually describe the red "thin" side as EXTRA medium. It wasn't enough to give the materials I sharpened the sharp edge I prefer. Keep the stone very wet. I recommend a small syringe/dropper bottle (I use colored applicators from a makeup store). The stone will become clogged with metal debris if not kept wet enough to wash it off. Overall --- I am still very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to all home sharpeners. That. He spoke highly of it and demonstrated its proper use. Haven't used it yet as I want to make a wooden case/mount so I can safely use it on my desktop. So my very first impressions of this stone and its packaging are very impressive. First, it is packed in a nice heavy standard box. I really appreciate the product that is well packaged. The item that comes in a reusable and semi-durable container makes me feel like the brand recognizes the importance of this little addition. With proper care and perhaps just a little fortification, this stone should be protected for decades. The stone is hard and heavy. It looks and feels MUCH more premium than cheap tool store bricks and flea market junk. It has sharp edges and corners that help sharpen the tool. But it will drain your stamina if you try to get the stone to the tool instead of the tool to the stone. I think the "fine" and "coarse" descriptions do not match the grit used in the descriptions of my other sharpeners. FINE on this stone appears to be a little closer to center, and COARSE is a little rougher. than expected. I wouldn't feel comfortable using it as a FINISH sharpener. I will use it for reprofiling and as a start to get the final edge. I have a very cheap log plane that is in dire need of ironing. I believe this kerosene coated Indian stone will be able to sharpen iron to a decent sharpness. The size and shape are just what I need for this. My washers and pocket sharpeners just aren't up to the task. Plane irons, chisels, machetes, bushcraft knives, large blades can be sharpened more easily with this stone. I will update this review after I sharpen my tools. But I feel like I could use this stone for years and my future grandchildren could use it and pass it on to their children. I remember my dad's Indy. stone and wished he still had it today.
