Review on Samlex America SEC1230UL: High-Performance 30 Amp Battery Charger 1213.3002 by Deelo Sylvester

This is a high quality product well worth the price. I have several other Samlex products and they all work great. This is a limited amperage power supply that I can use as a trickle charger for a non-volatile battery and ham radio. The SEC-1215UL automatically recharges the battery after a power failure and also provides operating power for normal operation. The battery is large enough to power the internet, computers, and lights during a power outage in my area. Many charger settings are adjustable and information from Samlex Technical Support has provided some really useful information on these settings for a specific application. Other chargers I have are either basic chargers or have a lot of radio interference and it's great that this is a smart charger and RF free. No RF interference was observed on any of the amateur radio bands from 160m to 70cm, neither on my HT, HF radios nor on the AM or FM bands. the smoke they give off just before they fail. An outage can occur when power returns after a power outage that has drained the battery to the point where it draws more current than the power supply can safely produce. Adding a fuse and series diode protects the power supply but leaves a dead battery after the fuse blows. The SEC-1215UL charger is current limited and will begin charging the battery as soon as power is restored. The charger has internal fuses to protect input and output, but no ON/OFF switch. The ammeter is very useful, it shows the battery charge level. A fully charged AGM battery draws very little quiescent current. The DC output of the charger is floating with respect to the AC input and chassis ground to avoid ground loops. The charger is fanless, completely silent and the instructions describe a vertical mounting solution for cooling. Battery cables are not included, but it was easy to make custom cables for my application using the provided headers and some Lowes wires and connectors. The charger is supplied with 120 V AC, but can be set to 230 V AC if desired. In the near future I plan to buy a Samlex America Solar SEC-1230UL charger for another project. SEC-1230UL has the same specifications except for higher power and fan. The Samlex Solar SEC-1215UL 12V SEC-UL Series Charger comes with an instruction manual that contains very helpful information on setup and operation. Charger. The charger is beautiful both inside and out. I gave this unit 5 stars because it is an excellent replacement for the previous limited no-power power supply and the excellent technical support from Samlex. Updated: 09/28/2018. Angle brackets at the end of the charger where the cables attach. This allows the charger to be positioned so that the meter is visible for easy reading. No holes were drilled as there were already holes in the corner brackets. Two #8 screws were used to attach the bracket to the existing holes in the charger. The first time I used the charger was to charge a completely dead 100Ah AGM battery and after a few minutes at 15 A, the charger was slightly warm Charger switched from boost voltage to floating voltage at about 2 amps. If you have several fully discharged 100Ah batteries, it is better to charge each one individually. I am very satisfied with the charger Samlex model SEC-1215UL.
