Gave one of these to my wife for Christmas. She used an old A520 (I think), 5 MP, 5x zoom. Terrible screen. But it has a true optical viewfinder. I like it. I love her but bless her heart, she just isn't tech savvy. I had to force an iPod and a MacBook on her. Despite showing signs of her inner geek, she actually asked for a radar detector. I was distracted. The criteria were: very small, light, reasonable number of pixels, good screen. And he knows how to keep it in his purse. Here it is for $70. Robust like the old S600? no I don't think there is anything yet. (Except for L glass lenses.) So I looked at all of them from all the big brands. Nikon and SONY have some competition, but partly due to the fact that I'm a staunch Canon devotee, this seems to tick all the boxes perfectly. It's really small and light, it fits perfectly in a small handbag. The zoom isn't great, but again it's a compromise between size and functionality. The stabilized 5x zoom is great for the type of photos it takes, and the 16-megapixel sensor gives us enough detail to play with and zoom in on images. As for the touchscreen, well. It's a nice glossy widget, but personally I prefer buttons. It's inconvenient (for me) to use the touchscreen to take photos. He feels unstable. I want to have a good grip with both hands and straighten my elbows. It seems to me (to me) that the change of grip and the movement of the fingers are unstable. The A3400 has many modes, enhancements and filters. They're funny, but I want the picture to be clean. I can then tinker with CS6 or Lightroom and add "artistic" effects. But you have to start with a good picture. You can do it with real pocket camera. The camera also records video in 720p and uses Canon's proprietary Digic4 processor. It's cheap enough that if it gets crushed in her purse, we'll buy another. The marriage group loves it. It lives in her purse. It takes more photos than that chunky 520. I get points for brownies. Maybe I'll try to cash out some money. I will buy a camera. Good night.
