Review on πŸ”¬ Accurate Measurement of Nitrate (NO3) Levels: NYOS Reefer Aquarium Test Kit by Brittany Turner

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Distilled water readings 5; API closest to parsing ICP

Where do I start, what a shitty excuse this 'test' kit is. The lowest quality dropper bottle I've seen for dispensing a reagent. At the slightest incline, the bottle begins to drip. When trying to shake the vial, the reagent leaked out at the seams and splattered everywhere. The 5ml syringe arrived broken and cannot be used. This kit also contains 2-3 times more powder reagent than you need. To be honest, the quality and chemical accuracy of this kit is like it was designed by a group of kids during their first science fair presentation, where they 3D printed reagent vials, caps and a syringe where Expectation that they are absolutely accurate. . The chemical accuracy of these tests is consistently off by about 5 ppm (values lower than ICP has ever shown when testing stock solutions in the 5 to 10 range). The only thing that makes this set stand out is the color comparison chart, which isn't even very helpful given the inaccuracy of the gauges that come with it, which always results in different shades of color when retesting the same water or standard solutions. Overall, this is a cheap and inaccurate product that uses the lowest quality equipment to perform a rebranded and less accurate nitrate test than the API. The API at least focuses on chemical accuracy and only requires you to shake the reagent bottle as an extra step beyond this NYOS precision justification. It's funny that all the positive reviews don't mention the actual capabilities or quality of the product (dispenser bottle, scoop, cap leaks every time you take it off) but focus on how "easy" it is to test their good to read results, although readings from these kits are actually 1-5ppm lower. Should be somewhat enthusiastic about the lower nitrate levels. I'm sticking with more accurate measurements due to the false confirmation bias why I wasted $25 on useless measurements. Of course, I only bought this kit once, which was enough to really demonstrate this company's financial strategy.

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Not everything fits
