Review on πŸ”„ Reusable Mold Making with ComposiMold: 3lbs Versatile Solution by Heather Shaw

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Let's talk about using concrete with these forms, I'm not keen on that.

I am making concrete pots and their trays. I have a great system for making pots, but trays are a whole different beast and I thought it might be worth trying out ComposiMold to replicate and mold some of the existing trays that I like. I'm a bit disappointed with the results of using concrete. with this fabric. BUT, considering the properties and peculiarities of ComposiMold, it becomes clear why I am not getting optimal results. It's a fantastic product, great price, great concept and the possibilities are endless because it's reusable. But maybe it's just not suitable for my application. First, most plastic or rubber molds for concrete leave a perfectly smooth poured concrete surface. Almost shiny. It seems you just can't get results like this with this product (and probably not with products that are reusable, fusible, or water soluble. Using this product will leave a rough, flaky, porous surface on the concrete). .Why? I think the moisture in the concrete is just enough to affect mold to surface contact, even with pure oil based mold release. I think that the moisture from the concrete surface is absorbed like a sponge into the water-soluble CompiMold material. Heat from curing concrete can also play a role here. This weakens the outer surface of the concrete and flakes off, leaving a rough surface. But the buyer should be careful, don't expect a perfectly shiny smooth object, but a perfectly shiny smooth copy. Concrete mix, different release agents (vegetable oils l. and coconut oil), each time with the same result. I use general purpose cement because it is very fine, contains no aggregate and gives a perfectly smooth surface. This is always highly recommended when concreting. I'm a little disappointed because I did a lot of research on this before spending about seventy dollars on it. A lot of literature says it works with concrete. AND IT WORKS. But the results aren't great. I am not sure if I will need this product anymore. I have photos to share but I don't see an option to add them :(

Pros
  • Works great with resins like ComposiCast, ComposiMold Plaster and more.
Cons
  • small items
