Review on πŸ”₯ MSD Blaster 8226 Ignition Coil by Shawn Xayamonty

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Different part, same part number

I have MSD ignition systems in all my cars and am happy with them. All cars have MSD 6A multiple spark discharge systems, so I know the coils will bounce. They fail after 80-100k miles so I carry a spare coil with me. No problem, this is to be expected on any vehicle that has a hotter ignition system than stock. This is not the reason for my bad rating. My 1992 Chevrolet had a part number 8226 MSD that failed, so I ordered a part number 8226 MSD to replace it. The current 8226 is NOT the same as the old 8226! I have photographed the old and new side by side, you can see they have the same part number but different parts. Yes, the MSD includes several additional metal brackets to attach to the standard bracket. However, this shifts the position of the coil by about half an inch. Mount the spool to one side and it will sit on the intake manifold and cannot be bolted to any of the mounting holes. Insert the spool on the other side and it will be pressed against the manifold and only held by one of the two screws. I understand that this app is over 20 years old. However, if MSD decided to discontinue any part, I don't understand why they didn't discontinue the part number as well. Using the same part number will cause errors in all parts catalogs including Revain. The old part 8226 will fit, but the new part 8226 will not. I strongly recommend that you thoroughly inspect your vehicle for fitment before ordering this new 8226 coil as the online part finder tools "It Fits Your Vehicle" are inaccurate. Instead I ordered an Accel coil which looks like an OEM style and I'm returning the MSD coil.
