I never measured compression prior to purchase but I needed to know the compression on my outboard motor to diagnose the problem I was having. I followed my engine service manual on how to properly do a compression test. It was a fairly simple procedure and more importantly, it helped me understand the condition of my outboard. All cylinders fired within the allowable range, within 10 psi of each other. Knowing this helped me eliminate many things that could be causing my problem. If you enjoy working on your own engines this compression test kit seems to be of pretty good quality and will get the job done for a lower price than a quality kit.
