A hybrid mountain bike tire that is very comfortable to ride

There really is no tire that excels on both paved and unpaved roads. But there are tires that are better suited for this than others. This has to be one of the best at it. Ever since I moved to the San Francisco Peninsula, I've been looking for more interesting and challenging trips home from work. I found a paved road that dead-ended a few miles from another paved road that takes me home (the streets of Montebello and Page Mill if you're familiar with the area). I figured out there is a way to walk several miles of dirt fire roads and trails to connect them and make a nice loop. My first attempt was on a mountain bike with a rigid fork and 26 inch Continental Gatorskin tires. Fast on the road (for mountain biking anyway) but the dirty parts were very risky, absolutely no grip and I had a hard time climbing and catching fishtails. a lot on the slopes. So I gave them a try, assuming the vast majority of riding is on tarmac so bumps are out of the question, but I need something that will give me grip in the dirt beyond slicks. These tires did the job as well as I could. which I was hoping for, smooth and fast on tarmac and enough traction with the recessed tread pieces to go up and down well in not-too-challenging dirt. I was able to stay nailed to the dirt with them, which I dared not do with the Gatorskins slick do. At 1.5 wide, they also offered a much smoother ride than the Contis 1.1 (which also had higher pressures per square inch). If you drive exclusively on asphalt, you can consider slick tires if the goal is speed, or just break down and buy a road bike - big wheels and an aerodynamic design will definitely make you go faster. I've had these tires on a hybrid bike before and loved their durability and flat surface protection so it's nice to find the perfect use for them and ride them again. These tires are some of the slickest tires you can put on a mountain bike, but if that's your biggest concern I'd recommend the Kenda K838 (like cloud swimming) - although Survivors have better protection for flat surfaces. Note that Continental Town and Country tires have a very similar profile, although the narrowest tire they have is 1.9. Something to consider.
