Review on Empava Inch Gas Stove Cooktop by Bob Jensen

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Very disappointing purchase

Having used this hob for a few weeks I feel like I didn't get my money's worth. This unit replaced a four burner Amana burner that was over 15 years old. I converted this unit to LP, which was relatively painless with the kit that came with it. A small burner (listed at 4,000 BTU) that claims to be able to cook doesn't. Whatever you use to cook with and when you adjust the flame from high to low the look at flame height is barely noticeable. We didn't have that much of a problem with the old unit, which had a 4500 BTU burner capacity. Customer service experience was mixed, email only, with incorrect English. They didn't react directly to what I told them, instead focusing on whether or not the regulator had been renewed. It took a few emails back and forth to finally get replies to her recommendations for adjusting the flame height: that to hold it in place you have to unscrew and remove each burner from the top of the unit. Not that easy as I sealed the unit with sealant. While I was able to get the flame down to low burn, the large left front burner didn't adjust at all. Also, the grates are already deformed due to the pans rocking back and forth when they are in the center of the burner. I put the oil in the pan on the front burner and it rolled back to the center of the hob. I thought maybe my meter was wrong. I then did the same thing with the burner directly behind it: the oil rolled forward (toward the center of the hob again) so the grates are obviously bent. Empawa offered to replace the device with a new one. However, I have to pay the shipping costs for returning the old device. Since I live in Ohio and they are in California, this is about 1/3 the retail price; and I may get another device that is the same or possibly worse. I gave two stars overall due to the lower cost compared to the bigger brands. But once again the old adage is confirmed: you get what you pay for.
