Review on Cisco SFP 10G LRM Gigabit Interface Converter by Cesar Rios

Mid-range optics for multimode or singlemode fiber

Cisco mid-range optics that work with both single-mode and multi-mode 10Gb fiber. We use them at work to connect to building networks. The Cisco specification states that these optics have a wavelength of 1310 nm and are suitable for 300 m (single mode) or 220 m (multimode OM3/OM4) paths. I use them with Cisco 2960-S switches on OM4 MMF - make sure the 2960 models support 10G ie have SFP+ interfaces (only some have). Most Cisco switches that support SFP+ support these LRMs. Run a pair of optical cables + patch cords for transitions between switches in the same rack or room. Instead, you can use much cheaper copper DAC cables with built-in transceivers, such as B. this Cisco 3M cable. For multimode connections, consider 10G-SR, which can be slightly cheaper and offer longer range than high quality fiber (OM3 or OM4). Note that the factory warranty on these is very short (90 days) so consider Cisco Smartnet Extended Service. New factory-packaged Cisco optics are expensive compared to the usual "Cisco-compatible" competitors, but I prefer to use Cisco-branded parts rather than risk potential incompatibility with a third-party device, especially in applications with high bandwidth like 10 Gb. .Recommended for medium 10Gbps deployments where fiber type is ambiguous and for connection to existing 10Gbps networks.
