that I've wanted to read this book for many years because I liked The Last Man on Earth (1964) with Vincent Price. And surprisingly, the film adaptation was pretty close (except for a few details, of course). Robert Neville is seemingly able to survive an apocalypse caused by the plague. The bottom line is that the plague turns its victims into vampire zombies. Robert is immune but is haunted by the loss of his beloved family. What is really scary about both the book and the aforementioned film is that Robert is not forgotten by the other undead. Every night his neighbors and an old friend visit his house and try to catch him by throwing rocks and calling his name. Yes. creepy of course. I liked the source material, although some parts are a little long. Robert was hard to love, especially when he was drinking. But his depression and anger are understandable, all the more frightening that it could happen to anyone in his place. Frustrated, sad but angry, agonizingly alone and upset at the world that left him so alone and scared. I recommend this book to fans of vampires, zombies and post-apocalyptic stories. I also highly recommend Vincent Price in The Last Man on Earth because his portrayal conveys this deep longing so convincingly. Richard Matheson was a legend himself, as this haunting story proves time and time again.
