The vest will keep your child's head above the water, but the vest will not stay in place. Once in the water the vest rises and rests on the child's chin/jaw. The zipper on the back cuts into the back of the child's head. No real cut just pressing on the skin which caused my child to complain of discomfort. Otherwise it seems to work. We sent it back leaving only the life jacket we have for the boat which has a strap that goes over the legs and clips in the front that keep the life jacket on the child's shoulders. Works great.
