Review on African Cichlid Aragonite 10-Pound Sand for Aquarium by Christina Martin

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great for clams and increases hardness

I bought this sand for my new clam tank (Neolamprologus Multifasciatus) that I'm moving my colony to. They love this material very much, it's a good little grain for them to dig, navigate and build piles. The hardness has also increased significantly. I've only tested with a TDS meter but in 2 weeks TDS in water has gone from 170 from the tap to 210 with sand, higher than any of my other tanks and a noticeable increase in hardness. I expect it will continue to increase as the tank matures and the buffer builds up. The sand itself is very fine-grained white or almost white sand. It's a lot smaller than other African cichlid substrates I've seen which is a plus for these multinationals. This is too fine a grit to stuff a gravel vacuum in, as all the sand will also be removed by the vacuum. So think about how it suits your cleaning preferences. Previously I could easily remove dirt from the top just by running the vacuum over the gravel just above the sand level. I would recommend a good cleaning as it took several days to clean the aquarium even after a few flushes. All in all, a high-quality cichlid sand.
