Review on Monarch Bicycle Suspension Shock Black by Miguel Yurco

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great, with a little note

I'm not a bike mechanic, just a cyclist. When I replaced my 5 year old Monarch 3.3 with this Monarch RT3 I noticed that they now place the fill nipple in a fixed extended position. The old Monarch 3.3 could pivot to the stowed position. I'm not thrilled that I now have a metal spike sticking out of my knee while riding! This can cause injury if it falls. Of course there is a lot of protruding metal on any bike, but before installing the Monarch RT3 I didn't have any metal spikes on my knee! (only 2 inches on downstroke). As an engineer, I believe Rockshox most likely did this to remove another seal, as the rotating 3.3 nipple likely required an additional seal at the pivot point. But why not fix the nipple in a position away from the knee? How often do you need quick side access to fill the shock? Bikes are meant to be ridden, and bikes should be optimized for RIDING, not maintenance. One star deducted for severe shock.
