They work like a regular straw, opening and closing easily for cleaning. I bought these for my child not considering that biting or bending the straw would cause it to break. open at the seam. It's easy enough to bring the sides together, but if your child is still learning to drink without biting, you'll have a lot of fixing to do. They are great for older kids or adults and definitely for travel. They are easy to clean, which is the main advantage of this type of straw compared to other types. There are a few small grooves along the entire length of the straw - where it bends to open and along the opening side where it snaps. I haven't had to clean these grooves yet as a regular soapy sponge seems to clean them. But perhaps if there is a thick, dried liquid (smoothie) cleaning may be needed. They are translucent, not transparent. You can see the liquid flow through the straw, so it's cool for kids. The outside also has an uneven texture. Size: 8.6 inches long, 0.5 inches in diameter, but only about 0.25 inches of room for liquid due to the way the straw snaps into place. Generally they work fine as advertised but may not work. Be the best choice for younger kids. Great for travel.
