This review is for a surface skimmer; I've only had it for a few days so this rating is subject to change. However, so far it seems to be a quality product. It works as advertised and cleans the surface film of water. The only caveat: make sure you don't go over capacity. The skimmer's bowl floats freely in the vertical shaft of the glass body and moves up and down with the water level. The danger is that if you let too much water through, the water will push the skimmer bowl down, and if it sinks completely below the water surface, it will suck until the bowl is flush with the glass body. . This means not only does the surface skimmer stop sliding across the surface, it also means there is a roughly 1/2 inch hole to suck water into the filter. This allows smaller tropical fish to get into your filter. Eheim 1250 pump and you will find that this is almost the limit of what this technique can handle. Review 10/20/16: Now that I've had this unit for 2 months, I would like to add that it is still excellent, the water surface is pleasant and transparent, although I had to put an O-ring on the skimmer bowl to prevent it from going under the water surface is sucked. What is happening is that the bottom water intake is slowly becoming clogged with debris, requiring more water to flow through the skimmer cup to compensate. Eventually he gets stuck. - The ring does not pose any danger to the fish, although I have to clean the bottom ring. Take it every few days or else it will suck air through the top as the skimmer bowl can't pass enough water while it's still at the surface. I'll make another intake to reduce the flow. Again, I use a 300 gph pump on this unit. I doubt this will be an issue on less powerful systems.
