Review on OTC 1120 Retaining Ring Pliers by Jorge Kehayas

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Big pliers. Still made in the USA

I have used the OTC 1120 Convertible Circlip/Circlip Pliers for several years and have always been pleased with their performance. The tool itself has an overall length of 6 inches. The handle portion is 3-1/2" long and 2-3/4" of each handle is covered with blue vinyl material. The knobs are easily converted from internal to external use by simply loosening the thumbscrew and then removing it from one hole in the tool head and then moving it to another hole where it is subsequently tightened again. These pliers are very comfortable for large hands of my size. My previous snap ring pliers were a cheap pair with more conventional interchangeable/replaceable tips rather than fixed tips like these. While the various sizes and shapes (e.g. straight, 45 degrees, curved) of interchangeable/interchangeable tips serve to make pliers more versatile, they have also historically been more prone to bending and breaking, even when used on snaps. Ring sizes they are designed for. In comparison, I haven't had any problems with the fixed tips on this OTC 1120 pliers yet, but note that the fixed tips on these or any other circlip pliers should only be used on circlips of the intended size, otherwise they may even become damaged. The only thing that worries me about these OTC 1120 pliers is their cost. which seems to me at least a bit overpriced for what you actually get. However, that seems to be the price of this or any other tool that is actually (and in a way notably) still made in the good old USA.

Pros
  • Vinyl grips
Cons
  • Cord shorter than others
