I have a 2008 Explorer. The light in the dome went on and off at random. After much googling I found a problem with the ignition switch. That fixed everything. disconnect the battery. Just below the steering wheel is a panel held in place by two screws and clips. Delete it. After that there are three screws holding the steering column cover (you will need 7/32 and 9/32 heads). Two are easy to spot. The third is in the hole behind the handlebar height adjustment lever. After that there are two clamps that hold the switch and a third that holds the wire mount. They can be easily removed with a flathead screwdriver. While the fall lasts 20 minutes. and my dome light is no longer haunted.
