Cheaper than surgery and safer than painkillers
My dog has arthritis which was anticipated due to a cruciate ligament rupture in one leg and the other leg probably needed surgery at some point. I've found that mixing a small amount of water in his diet twice a day has a marked impact on how far he can walk, how high he can jump and just general stiffness when standing up. It doesn't work miracles but I think it's worth what I pay for and it's a much better choice than dangerous painkillers.
