Epoxy for setting, shellac for painting

I had my doubts but as I couldn't bend a piece of wood (tried steam, tried lamination ) around my brick hearth, I decided to try this material. It was flexible as advertised, especially when I warmed it up (I laid it out on a black rug in the sun for a few minutes). I didn't manage to glue it with PL Loctite Premium - there wasn't a strong hold and basically no way to clamp it. One spot that could be clamped, however, glued together perfectly. For me it was better to use epoxy - it took me 5 minutes and glued about a foot at a time, which worked great and was much, much easier and quicker for me than fiddling with Loctite. (Of course it helps that I'm very used to epoxy, but it's not difficult). I used the same stain/finish as the rest of the paneling (regular 1/4 round pine) and I don't think you can tell they are different materials, which surprised me greatly. I tried a gel stain but found it was mostly rubbed off. The shellac with the dye used on the rest of the fairing worked well.

Pros
  • For interior and exterior use - won't warp, rot or crack in high humidity
Cons
  • Not bad but...
