I just tried this today and even after rubbing the inkstone with a few milliliters of water for a long time, a light gray ink came out. Already in the first few seconds I saw a difference to other clubs. I've used ink pens successfully in the past and taken courses in ink drawing and Chinese calligraphy, so I'm pretty sure I'm not. I haven't had a new ink stick in a while, but I rubbed it long enough to go through whatever coating it might have. The wooden box it comes in is good. I feel like I got a low quality stick for a high price.
