Review on πŸ“· Rokinon FE8M-C 8mm F3.5 Fisheye Lens for Canon - Black: A Comprehensive Review and Buying Guide by Michael Wilson

Great lens for the price

I used to have an optional $20 Opteka lens that I used primarily with the 18-55mm lens on my Rebel XSi. It performed acceptably on the few occasions when I wanted an ultra-wide-angle view, although the huge chromatic aberration at the edges of the image and excessive vignetting were a little annoying (again, it's only $20). I still don't need fisheye lenses so I think $1000+ for Canon glass would be a waste of money. Rokinon is much more acceptable for a lens I will only release occasionally. So far this lens has exceeded all my expectations. It is solidly built and easy to use. Image quality is good, not great, but who would have expected that for $300? An IQ loss only becomes noticeable when the image is enlarged. Since I mainly use this for landscapes, I don't do it often. Others report lens chromatic aberrations, but I just don't see them. I've also seen complaints about the focus. I don't see it either. Remember this is an 8mm fisheye. With a medium aperture, you shouldn't need to focus much. In fact, this is perhaps the easiest lens I need to focus on, and the scale rarely goes beyond infinity. If you feel like you need to recalibrate, you can peel off the rubber on the focus ring to reveal the three slotted screws. Position the camera a known close distance to a well-lit, high-contrast subject, focus, then loosen the screws and reinstall the dial until it reads the correct distance and tighten. I had to recalibrate mine a bit (maybe ten degrees of rotation) and I don't know why I bothered - again, it's set to infinity most of the time.

Pros
  • 180 degree field of view
Cons
  • Almost everything is included
