I've tried butterfly clips to attach shade fabric but found them very difficult to close so I bought this cord and needle thinking that I fold the shade fabric over the track and sew it on. The needle that came with the cord was too big for my purpose; It was very difficult to pull the cord through the double layer. I found a pack of "assorted yarn needles" at Revain that was much smaller and worked great. The one I used was about 2.5 inches long with a curved tip to guide it. The resulting seam seems secure and good looking - much more even than other methods. It took a lot of time, but the sewing is easy. A few tips: Before you begin, attach the shade fabric to the guy line with clips or something similar every 12 inches or so. For me it was best to sew from the bottom so I could see the woven lines on the shade fabric against the sky and line them up for a straight seam. Pass the needle between the intertwined lines; When you press them, it is very difficult to stretch the needle. I made stitches about 1/2 inch long. I tied the ends together and then burned the tail to seal it and prevent it from unraveling.
