Review on Sharpen Like a Pro with the Spyderco Benchstone Ultra Fine Box by Nathan Akers

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Mirror polished (after smoothing)

I only sharpened water stone but this ceramic stone changed that. Initially, the stone produced a hazy finish. The surface of the stone is somewhat structured. I checked the flatness of the stone by rubbing it on a diamond stone. It's fairly flat, but with small indentations. After leveling, which requires considerable effort, the surface becomes much smoother and gives a beautiful deep mirror finish that I have never been able to achieve with a water stone. Of course, my highest grit waterstone is 8000. I'm sure a 10k to 15k waterstone would do the same polish, but the cost of that would be at least twice as much. TBH, I still prefer sharpening with waterstones because I'm more familiar with the feel. However, this ceramic stone will remain in my arsenal as the ultimate polisher. I saw someone ask if they could do without the superfinishing. Please do not. Imagine trying to poke a rock into glass. You will just be disappointed and hate life. UF is intended for polishing an already sharp edge. Use medium grit if you only need one stone. Or take 1k Shapton and start there.
