I purchased an 8 cup chemex handled glass jar after becoming increasingly frustrated with the taste of my kurig. I did a little research and decided on Chemex over French Press as I prefer a paper filter over a metal filter. I've only been using it for a week, but so far I like it. I prefer the full glass version as I can put it in the dishwasher once a week to clean it. Removing the bamboo would be an unnecessary step. For daily cleaning I use a bottle brush with soapy water, rinse and let air dry. So far there is no discoloration or accumulation. In terms of coffee flavor, I'm still improving my process, but it's significantly better than the Kurig I'm replacing. Finding the right water to coffee ratio takes trial and error, but I think I have it now. It is also important to find the right degree of grinding. Too coarse and the water oozes out too quickly and you get weak coffee, but too fine and the water oozes out too slowly. However, the whole process of boiling water and waiting for it to "scald" takes longer. For my husband who runs out the door in the morning before work, he still uses the Kurig for convenience. But I have more time in the morning and a routine doesn't bother me.
