I thought the ball would start the siphon but it didn't. You have to keep pressing. I consent to filling the lawnmower or other small gas tanks. I used it to fill a 2 gallon container with gasoline from a 5 gallon container. It was a little workout. I've found that by lifting the larger container higher than the smaller one and attaching the hose securely to both containers, I can gently step on the ball instead of squeezing it. It's better than picking up and trying to safely pour 5 gallon cans.
