The divider is made of very durable plastic with enough holes for some water to circulate. However, I bought a 15.7*11.8 inch divider hoping it would fit my 20 gallon tank but my betta fish was still able to swim to the other side at the corners. Luckily I also bought a Pen-Plax separator for aquariums. , which had a thin mesh screen that looked like it was about to fall apart. I combined both to use this screen and the corner plastic from Pen-Plax Baffle and Wallah! Ideal! The fish can't swim to the other side and it looks really cool.
