Review on πŸ“Ά D-Link DI-624M MIMO Wireless 108G Router by Jacob Fish

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Terrible firmware update process and VPN not working

I have a third DI-624M. The first two were killed trying to update to the latest firmware. Please note that new firmware is already available on the D-Link website. Previous reviewers said no, so apparently they've finally released some of them. Be VERY careful when trying to update the firmware! Even though the manuals and online guides don't say anything about a long wait, once you start installing the firmware, you'll have to wait more than 10 minutes for it to complete! No warnings, no progress bar, just a spinning hourglass in the web browser. If you break your web browser, you're simply destroying the router permanently. Eventually the browser times out and it looks like it's going to fail. After that, the router no longer speaks. After several power cycles it finally started to respond and work with the new software. On the third router, that is! The first two were permanently killed by this process. Strange. So I had the latest firmware at the time and the router worked perfectly for normal Internet access. So I moved on to the next task, VPN access to my corporate network. My company uses Nortel VPN. This router cannot work with a decent VPN. I spent hours talking to their tech support trying to open different ports etc but it never worked. My girlfriend's VPN (another brand, I forgot which one) doesn't work through this router either. My old Speedstream worked great for VPN right out of the box, no issues, no config changes etc. Too bad it's dead or I'd still use it. I think I'll have to bring this sucker back and try Linksys.Bummer. Now these things are so cheap they're almost disposable, but I'd easily pay twice as much for something that's stable and works flawlessly.
