This stone is excellent quality (3 grits for $17! -- I've seen the exact same stone under a different brand for about $40). I'm not sure of the accuracy of the grit, but I've used it successfully to keep my kitchen and pocket knives sharp enough. Is splitting hairs scary? nope Quickly finished with vegetables and sharp packing tape? Yes. And my technique is quite imperfect, I'm sure as I improve I'll make it sharper. I use 1000 stone for a few minutes on each side, then I use 6000 stone to sling. And here's another free tip that will give you a third, coarser braid for free: The leveling stone is coarser than the other two surfaces and feels like it has a 300 grain. I used it to start a very dull knife and it worked fine. The packaging was superb, everything was boxed and packed very securely in molded foam. Everything was in place and intact, nothing broke. I was concerned given the weight and fragility of the stone. The packaging is so good I hung a rock on it between uses. The stone also comes with rubber boot, bamboo base, leveling stone and edge guide. To be honest, I could do without everything else in the kit. The bamboo base looks nice but isn't needed, the little silicone cover holds up my countertop better than a "non-slip" base (and now I use the stone on a board that I put over my kitchen sink and the stone itself holds up the wood quite well without help). The edge guide is completely useless. The back of every knife I've sharpened is much thinner than the back of the blade guide, meaning the blade can rotate about 5 degrees within the guide. I threw it away. I think a leveling stone will come in handy, but I don't need it yet. I don't think it will ever be necessary. All in all, I would recommend this stone to those who just need to hold their knives easily. Sharp enough, but doesn't want to make a profession (or hobby) out of sharpening. If you can't find a cheaper option without a bamboo base and edge guide, get one.
