HDMI doesn't work well for computers and accessories

HDMI doesn't work. This is what my screen looks like when I use the adapter. It's ok if I use the HDMI port on my laptop so I know it's not a monitor. I wanted something that I could just plug into my laptop with my monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc. attached, rather than having to plug each one in individually, so I was very hopeful. Unfortunately disappointed.
