I purchased this timer and returned it because it did not go through the defrost cycle. The new block did the same until I carefully read a sentence in the instructions that came with the block. "If the UET is in a defrost cycle when power is lost, the defrost cycle will restart when power is restored." I bought this unit to fix a fairly new under the counter unit to prevent the expensive electromechanical defrost timer from exceeding the defrost cycle. The wiring diagram for this fridge of mine shows that the timer neutral (terminal 3) was built into a bimetallic switch, presumably a safety device for the defrost heater. After circling the bimetallic element, it turned out that the device works as described. I believe the timer starts a defrost cycle, the heating element starts and at some point the bimetallic switch opens and power is removed, the heating element cools, the switch closes, power is restored to the timer, and the cycle restarts. possibly an infinite loop! I mention that if anyone has a similar situation, check if there is a situation where the power is cut and reset during the defrost cycle.
