I received a strange request from my future sister-in-law. For the wedding, she wanted small pieces of wood, 2.5 to 4 inches in diameter, for centerpieces on tables. She wanted to put a votive inside. This meant I had to drill a two inch hole in each piece, about 2.5 inches deep. I found some maple branches and cut them into 6 inch sections. Trying to drill a hole in that hard maple rock was like drilling a piece of rock. The usual Forstner nozzle did not do justice to its task. I searched the internet and found this bit. It was still a chore, but this piece chewed through those pieces. The serrated edge and three bladed interior was the best combination for drilling this hardwood. This beat also has a feature that I love and have not seen in any other beat of this type. The center of the self-feed bit is detachable. This was great because the drill would go into the wood first and get stuck in the wood. I was able to remove the center feed and replace it with a standard drill. PERFECT! BRILLIANT!
