high quality filter with poor design and/or workmanship

arrived safe and sound as advertised. The K&N brand is known for being a durable and efficient filter and this filter is no exception. I had to cut a short rubber tab from the base so as not to affect the fit. Others have found the set screw difficult to tighten, but they probably pushed it all the way in and then couldn't find the inside of the screw. This is because the female part is about 1/3 of the way from the TOP of the filter and not close to the base, so it is necessary to turn the screw in about 1 inch and keep it straight as much as possible to center them. It will then start quite easily if all threads are free of rust and dirt. UPDATE: Upon removing for cleaning, I found the top/"cap" sealing area on the back was leaking, allowing unfiltered air to enter the engine. The leak cannot be visually inspected and the narrow access does not allow you to "feel" for the correct location. Ultimately this is a good quality filter that suffers from poor design and/or performance - if it doesn't filter everything consistently it will affect the longevity of the engine and on bikes like my KLR 650 that could end up anywhere engine protection is required . There are other good products that do the job reliably and I will be replacing this one soon.
