Review on ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Efficient and Versatile Visioneer Patriot D40 Duplex Scanner with 80-Page ADF for PC and Mac by Andrew Burnside

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Outstanding sheet feed scanner ADF

The big problem with this scanner is clearly the large number of fools who buy it. A lot of reviewers just have no idea. If you're not a fool, this scanner will serve you well for any reasonable purpose. It has various interfaces that vary in complexity and performance. I invariably use the TWAIN interface for scanning with ABBYY ScanReader, which gives me a lot of control over the output. In general I find I can make copies that look much sharper and cleaner than the worn and faded old originals. Sometimes they stick, but rarely, and often it's my fault. (You can't make sure the pages are separate, for example.) Paper jams are easy to clear, and the scanner usually detects them and stops before the paper is badly damaged. The feed path is fairly straight and almost flat, meaning the scanner can handle a variety of papers with ease. Scanning is very fast at 300 dpi, but becomes significantly slower at other resolutions. Fortunately, 300 dpi is usually fine. There was a time when scanners were much faster in black and white, but not now. B/W, greyscale and color images work at the same speed. The scanner folds easily into a very neat package that looks good on the table and protects the internal mechanism. When scanning, it is not very loud and you can have a normal conversation. I've had it for a year now and am very happy with it.

Pros
  • IMAGE ENHANCEMENT TECHNOLOGY: Visioneer Acuity technology allows the scanner to instantly enhance the visual clarity of each scanned image; Get perfect scans from imperfect originals
Cons
  • Definitely a bad product
