Review on Big Horn Split Ring Stop Collar: 7-Piece Set for Improved Precision and Safety by Morgan Gilmore

Tightening enough to stay in place

3-4 stars could be picked at this point. Will be lower if thread ever breaks. The first set was missing a screw so I sent it back for a replacement. All parts were included in the spare parts set. I was and still am concerned about how tight the screws need to be to keep them from moving. Some have complained about thread pulls. Mine has never been disassembled and I've only used it a handful of times as I'm a layman and not a professional everyday user. I can understand why some people took them off because the screws need to be tight enough that they don't move. I had to drill some 6mm holes for the shelf brackets and didn't want to drill all the way through the sides of the cabinet. . I tried a ¼" stopper on a 15/64" drill but it didn't work. The stop has a small groove that closes when you tighten the set screw. The sides seem to bang against each other and never compress enough to hold the ¼" stop on a 15/16" drill bit. So, back to the duct tape stop for this project. Maybe I should have bought a different type of design where the set screw goes right up against the drill bit itself for more versatility.

Pros
  • Designed to grip the full diameter of the drill bit without the screw ever touching the shank
Cons
  • The newer model
