Like other similar scales, they don't work well with a single digit gram weight. I tested this pencil with two pencils: together they weigh 12 grams, the heaviest being 8 grams. But the lighter one shows 4g briefly and then goes to ZERO. Put the heavier one back in and it reads 8g. The logic seems to be that anything under 5g is an error and the scale settles to zero. Ouch! Other than that, it's a great scale, and the fold-down platform allows you to weigh odd-shaped or large items. This erroneous null function is NOT a single entity. I have another (same make, same model) that is 5 years old and does the same thing. Be aware and don't try to measure something really light. Putting a light thing in a heavy bowl and pressing "Container" won't solve the problem. Tries. I love that it beeps when the weight is stable. It turns itself off, but when you press it to change weight it stays awake (like moving a mouse on a laptop).
