Their snug fit significantly reduces ambient noise, but they also amplify "internal" sounds, like the clatter of your footsteps as you run. The Vista's sound quality is better than the Apple AirPods, but I found the AirPods to be more comfortable on my ears (although they do move a bit) and generally better suited for running, since you're more aware of your surroundings than listening to your footsteps reflected in the ears. EXTRA THOUGHTS: Since writing this I've been spending a lot of time in the peloton at my gym due to a knee injury. I wish I had noise canceling headphones because with AirPods it's difficult to hear the Peloton instructor (and music) through the music/speakers at the gym. So maybe the Vistas would have served me better if I had used them differently.
